Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much of my donation goes to help service members and their families?

A: The MMFF has extremely low overhead and fundraising expenses. Based on the formula used for calculating overhead and fundraising expenses when applying for the 2011 Combined Federal Campaign, MMFF reported a 0.7% expense ratio.

Q: How do I apply for assistance?

A: Due to privacy issues, the MMFF does not interact directly with military members or their families. We ask that they contact one of the federally-funded Family Assistance Centers located around the state. See http://www.btyr.org/family-assistance-centers. They can also be reached at 1-888-234-1274. The Family Assistance Centers serve any branch of service whether active duty, National Guard, or reserve.

Q: Do you accept donations of goods or services?

A: Generally not. As part of our desire to keep overhead as low as possible, we have no physical location to store donated goods. We also do not have the ability to link service providers with eligible members or their families. The First Lady's Care Initiative fulfills that role. See http://www.militaryfamilies.state.mn.us

Q: How do I make a donation?

A: You can send a check payable to "MMFF" to Minnesota Military Family Foundation, 620 Mendelssohn Ave N, Golden Valley, MN 55427. Credit card donations are accepted via PayPal.

Q: Can we designate that our donation be used for a particular purpose?

A: The MMFF would prefer that you do not designate a particular cause, region, or family. We do not have the capability to evaluate requests that we receive from the Family Assistance Centers on those criteria.

Q: Who does the MMFF provide assistance to?

A: The MMFF is focused on providing assistance to military members who are: citizens of Minnesota when they enter service; are military members stationed in MN or; are serving in a Minnesota unit. The immediate family members of any of those service members are also eligible for assistance.

Q: How does the MMFF determine who will receive help?

A: Once the requests are screened by the Family Assistance Centers, they are forwarded to the MMFF for action. Each MMFF board member votes on the request electronically. If a majority of board members vote for the request, the Family Assistance Center is notified of the action.

Q: How long does it take to get approval for a grant?

A: Since the MMFF board members vote electronically, requests can be approved as quickly as a couple of hours, once the requests are received from the Family Assistance Centers.

Q: How are the funds paid to persons whose requests are approved?

A: The MMFF generally does not pay money directly to service members or their families. Instead, the MMFF pays the funds to the companies or agencies that the requestor owes money to in order to satisfy outstanding bills or to pay for emergency services.

Egan makes generous donation to Minnesota Military Family Foundation

Brooklyn Park, Minn.—Brig. Gen. Jon Trost accepted a donation on behalf of the Minnesota Military Family Foundation from Egan Companies Jan. 23 at Egan Companies Headquarters in Brooklyn Park, Minn. Employees of Egan pooled money donations together over the holiday season and researched the best way to contribute the money. After accumulating a total of $7,500, the Egan Companies employees agreed the Minnesota Military Family Foundation would be the best allocation of the money. "We thought, given the state of the country—with the war going on, this would be a worthwhile cause to give to," said Bill John, a director with Egan. The donation comes at a time when the Minnesota National Guard's 1st Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division's tour of duty in Iraq was recently extended for a period of four extra months 'boots on the ground.' "It's in the philanthropic endeavors of the Egan Companies and their desire to support the Minnesota National Guard Soldiers and Airmen, and also all the other branches in Minnesota, which the foundation supports," said Brig. Gen. Jon Trost. The Minnesota Military Family Foundation is a fund that assists military families in Minnesota who have encountered financial hardships due to a deployment of a main provider in the home. Egan Companies is a Minnesota-based contracting company that specializes in construction projects for company facilities. By Cpl. Joe Roos, Minnesota National Guard Public Affairs 1/23/07
